The Art of Doom – Creating Riffs Using the Major 3rd Interval

In this lesson we take a look at the Major 3rd interval, which can serve as a colourful addition within the realm of Doom Metal.

Practice Tips

  • Although the Major 3rd interval is traditionally seen as having a happy sort of sound, when harmonizing what are essentially chromatic ideas and Minor 2nd intervals, the sound takes on a much darker vibe.
  • Doom Metal does not always have to sound dark and 'evil'. Black Sabbath often employ a Blues-based approach, whilst outfits such as Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride infuse their sound with ethereal Gothic elements.
