Inverted Power Chords

This lesson explores the use of Inverted Power Chords. These are most commonly used in the genres of thrash and death metal. The idea we're going to look at has a strong Morbid Angel sort of vibe to it. Another important technique presenting itself is Palm Muting. In the context of things, this may be a little tricky at first, particularly for the novice learning guitarist, as we need to switch between using this technique and then not using it.

Practice Tips

  • Inverted Power Chords are great for sounding heavier and more brutal without tuning down. They sound really cool when being palm-muted, too, so get some of that into your own creations and you'll see what I mean.
  • Using these shapes with Phrygian or Phrygian Dominant based scales is a great way to bring a really dark flavor, as is evidenced by the examples provided in the video.
