Acoustic Techniques – Thumb Index Pattern With Embellishments

This lesson takes a look at a thumb and index finger right hand pattern along with some embellishment ideas to colour it.

Practice Tips

  • Try to look for all the options in the position you're in before looking elsewhere on the fretboard. Chords can be embellished with nearby scale tones, or altered in small ways that go a long way to creating variety.
  • Example 2 showcases the need to let the notes ring out for as long possible. This can be challenging because the fingers will want to make the change earlier than they really need to. The longer everything rings out, the more fluid the sound.
  • Try using hybrid picking as well as the thumb/index approach. It's great to be able to do both, and will add some depth to your playing.
