- One of the things that really opened up my playing was learning to use all the available scale tones around more basic shapes to come up with more interesting sounds. Why just stick to power chords? Knowing where all those options are when playing progressions will give you lots of ways of colouring the sound and staying away from the ordinary.
- Distortion can be used for more than just power chords. Just make sure you don’t saturate the sound to the point of not being able to hear what’s going on in the voicing. Also, be sure not to scoop the mids or be stingy with the treble. These help to bring clarity and presence to the sound.
